The problem it fixes

1 strong score can hide a weak one.

Averages are kind to weak spots. A great sales number can lift the overall score while a failing area stays out of sight.

How it works

From parts to 1 fair picture.

  1. Name the facets

Break what you are scoring into 4 or more facets, such as the parts of a company.

  2. Group them into clusters

Gather the facets into 2 or more clusters, so related parts are read together.

  3. Weight each facet

Give each facet a weight; all weights add up to 1. Clusters are never weighted.

  1. Build the composite

Combine the weighted facet scores into 1 overall result.

  2. Apply the floor override

If a facet falls below its floor, that weakness overrides the overall score. 1 strong area cannot hide it.

The diagram

Faceted Assessment Framework: 5 layers A stack of 5 layers, read from the bottom up: facets, then clusters, then weights on each facet, then the composite score, then the floor override, which stops 1 strong area hiding a weak one. Floor override weakness always shows Composite 1 overall picture Weights per facet only Clusters 2 or more Facets 4 or more
5 layers, read from the bottom up. The floor override sits on top.

The outcome

See the weak spot early.

You get 1 overall picture that still shows each weak area, so you most likely fix the right thing sooner.

Results are most likely to follow if the process is followed properly, with good intention and best effort.
